There are three essential nutrients for life---carbohydrates, fats and protein. We need to eat these nutrients everyday along with vitamins, minerals and water. Problems with nutrition arise when you exaggerate your food intake to favor only one nutrient. For example, when you eliminate fats you eliminate taste, satiety, long-term energy, and the ability to use the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. When you eliminate carbohydrate, you eliminate energy and fiber. Nutrition is simple---eat all of the necessary nutrients at each meal and the food will taste good, you will feel full quicker and longer, and you will be getting all that you need to be healthy.
I read about a study conducted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The study concluded that a breakfast, which contains fat, as opposed to the typical American breakfast of all carbohydrate or high sugar, was better for you in terms of satiety and gaining less weight. This sounds like nutrition 101 and just common sense.
You do not have to be a registered dietitian to understand the basics of nutrition and to eat to stay healthy. Eat a wide variety of colorful, real foods (real foods do not come with a label) cook them simply, and dress them lightly and you will be getting all of the necessary nutrition you need. If your doctor suggests you supplement your diet, or you currently supplement your diet and you see a value in supplementation, then please continue to do so. Otherwise, buy real food, cook it yourself, and do not eliminate any essential nutrients.
Cooking is easier than you think and you and your family are worth the time and effort it takes.
Simple cooking idea: Buy Cheddar and Monterey Jack when they are on sale. Cut them into usable portions, label, wrap well, and put in the freezer. The taste and texture will be perfect.
